Connection between Nath Yogis and Saffron Colour

Why yogis, holy men, sage, or ascetic choose saffron colour.

The story goes like this.

In the time before satyug (Era of truth or golden age), saints, holy men, sages etc used to wear animal skins to cover themselves (Tiger skin or deer skin). Also these skins were used by yogis to sit and meditate or for spiritual purposes.

In the dawn of Satyug (Era of truth) once Adinath (Lord Shiva) was giving lecture to Aadishakti Maa Parvati (Holy mother Parvati). Aadinath was giving knowledge about Yoga, Third eye, about Maya, detachment and sacrifice.

 The feeling of vairaag (Renouncement and sacrifice) filled her heart.

Filled with renunciation, she cut her vain with her nails, with her blood colored her clothes and her shawl. 

Time passed and Siddha Yogi Guru Gorakshnath happened to meet her. On seeing Holy mother, Gorakshnath called her mother and her heart also filled with motherly love towards Gorakshnath. Pleased with the feeling, holy mother aadishakti gave her shawl to Siddha Gorakshnath.

It was since then, the color was accepted by all sages, yogis, holy men and Siddha as a symbol of Knowledge, renouncement, sacrifice, truth, ahimsa, celibacy, forgiveness, mercy, decorum and code of conduct.

Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or disinterestedness

The variants worn by Naths are as below

1.    Kantha (Saffron or Blood red in color) :-

This is a cloth which covers full body from neck to knee. Celibate and pure yogis wear this. Used for reciting mantra, Tantra, Maaran and stambhan mantras.

2.    Alfi (Saffron or blood red in color) :-

It also covers full body. The design is such that it has big pockets on both side. Open from both sides take out hands. Usually hermits and yogis (Tapasvi) use it.

3.    Gaati (Saffron, blood red or white) :-

It is a single piece of cloth 8-9 meters long. It is worn in such a way that it covers chest, both arms are free, tied on waist and covers body till knees. It is easy for movements. Free roaming hermits, yogis wear this.

4.    Kati Vastra (Saffron , blood red or white) :-

Piece of cloth, 1.5 to 3 meters in length. Tied on waist and covers waist up to knees.

5.    Pancha Baana (Saffron or blood red)

This is a combination of turban, kati vastra, tunic or top. Senior priests, Peer etc use it. The cloth is worn without stitching.   

mantra 
sat namha adesh guruji ko adesh. OM guruji OM soham dhundukara, shiv shakti ne mil kiya pasaaraa, nakh se cheer bhagh banaayaa, rakt roop me bhagwa aaya. Alakh purush ne dhaarana karaa taba peeche siddho ko diya. Aavo sidhho dharlo dhyan bhagwa mantra ko karo parnaam. Itna bhagwa mantra sampoorn hua shree Nath ji guru ji ko adesh.

 translation :- 

भगवा रंग का नाथो मे महत्व ! नाथो ने भगवा क्यो अपनाया और इसका क्या महत्व है 

सतयुग के पहले जब मानव का अस्तितव था  ! संत महात्मा वन मे चर्म के वस्त्र पहंते थे ! मानवो की अधिकतर जातिया विकसित नही थी ! कुछ ही जातिया विकसित थी ! 

   

आदीकाल मे बाघम्बर तथा मृग चर्म का वस्त्र स्वरूप मे उप्योग करते थे ! मृगछाला कटी वस्त्र रूप मे लपेटकर उपयोग करते थे ! जप तप के लिये इसे आसन के रूप मे उपोयग करते थे !

 फिर सतयुग का आगमन हुआ ! सतयुग मे एक बार आदिनाथ (महादेव) जी ने आदीशक्ती (सती पर्वती) जी को गुप्त ज्ञान  तथा योग ज्ञान  आत्म ज्ञान  का उपदेश सुनाया ! 

तब सती पर्वती को ज्ञान  के प्रभाव से वैरग्य तथा त्याग का भाव निर्माण हुआ! तब शिव शक्ती ने अपने रक्त से चोला बनाया था !

 आगे जब गुरू गोरक्श्नाथ ने माता पर्वती जी से भेंट करी, तो उनके मन मे मा का भाव उत्पन्न हुआ ! माता अती प्रसन्न हुई और प्रसन्नता से यह रक्त रूप चोला गुरू गोरल्क्स्नाथ जी को दिया ! तबसे यह रक्त रूप मे भगवा को नाथ सिद्धो ने अपनाया और सभी साधू सम्प्रदाय मे यह रंग त्याग और वैराग्य का प्रतीक बन गया ! इस भगवे का तीनो लोको मे सम्मान है ! इस भगवे बाने से भूत प्रेत असुरी शक्तिया भय से दूर भागती है !

        ग्यान , वैराग्य, त्याग, बहमचार्य, सत्य, अहिंसा, दया , आदर्श, मर्यादा शांती इत्यादी का प्रतीक ये भग्वा रंग बना ! 

नाथ सिद्ध इसका भेष बनाते है ! 

1. कंथा (लाल रक्त रंगीन तथा गरुवे रंग मे) :-

   गले से लेकर घुटने तक समपूर्ण काया को ढकता है ! यह चोला ब्रह्म्चार्य योगी पहंते है ! मंत्र शक्ती, तंत्र शक्ती, तारण – स्तम्भन शक्ती विद्या मे कंथा धारण करते है !

2. अल्फी  (रक्त लाल या गेरुवा )

  कंथी की तरह ही सम्पूरण शरीर ढकता है ! इसमे बडी बडी जेबे होती है ! दोनो हाथो मे खूली बाह वाली अल्फी तपस्वी योगेश्वर पहंते है ! जप साध्ना या उग्र तपस्या के लिये उप्युक्त !

3. गाती (रक्त लाल या गेरुवा या सफेद )

8-9 मीटर लम्बी धूती है ! इस प्रकार पहंते है की दोनो हाथो के बगल से दो छोर निकाल कर सीने पर से दोनो कन्धो पर विरुद्ध दिशा से लपेटकर कमर मे गांठ बान्धते है ! चलने फिरने और आसन लगाने मे आसानी है ! कर्म योगी स्थानधारी भी पहंनते है !

4. कटी वस्त्र (रक्त लाल, गेरुवा या सफेद)

1.5 से 3 मीतर लम्बीकमर मे पहने जानी वाली कटी घुटने तक शरीर को ढकती है ! अन्य शरीर खूली ही रहता है ! रम्मत योगी का वस्त्र

5. पंच बाना ( गेरुवा या रक्त लाल)

इसमे लंगोटी, धोती, कुर्ता, साफा आता है ! बडे बडे स्थानधारी, महंत पीर योगेश्वर बिना सिलाय ही इसे पहंनते है !

भगवा मंत्र 
सत नमह आदेश गुरूजी को आदेश ओम गुरुजी ओम सोहम धुन्दुकारा शिव - शक्ती ने मिल किया पसारा नख से चीर भग बनाया रक्त रूप मे भगवा आया 
अलख पुरष ने धारण किया तब पीछे सिद्धो को दिया ! आवो सिद्धो धरलो ध्यान, भगवा मंत्र को करो प्रणाम इतना भगवा मंत्र सम्पूरण भया श्री नाथ जी गुरुजी को आदेश आदेश
